Project Overview

3SC Group Scaffolding was appointed to design, supply, erect, inspect, adapt and dismantle a comprehensive scaffolding system to facilitate extensive external painting and redecoration works across the Badbury and Monburybuildings at an occupied Agincare care home.

The project involved providing safe access to multiple elevations, including numerous gable ends, dormer windows, balconies and courtyard areas, while ensuring the care home remained fully operational throughout the duration of the works.

Our team worked closely with the principal contractor and site management to carefully phase the installation, maintaining safe access for residents, visitors, staff, emergency services and contractors always.

The Challenge

Working within a live care home environment required careful planning and communication to minimise disruption whilst maintaining the highest standards of health and safety.

The project presented several challenges, including:

  • Large-scale scaffold installation across multiple buildings.
  • Numerous complex gable elevations requiring bespoke scaffold layouts.
  • Maintaining uninterrupted access for residents, visitors and care staff.
  • Working around landscaped gardens, footpaths and communal areas.
  • Providing safe access for external decoration works without impacting the day-to-day operation of the home.
  • Careful coordination with the painting contractor to allow phased working.

Scope of Works

The project included scaffolding to both the Badbury and Monbury buildings, incorporating multiple independent scaffold structures, access towers and hop-up platforms.

Badbury

  • Front entrance double gable scaffold (9.2m x 1 lift) with triple handrail protection.
  • Independent scaffold to first gable (6.8m x 2 lifts) incorporating a 4m hop-up.
  • Double gable scaffold (13m x 2 lifts) with 4m hop-ups to both gables.
  • Two 3-lift access towers providing safe access to dormer windows.
  • Rear garden scaffolds to both left and right gables (6.5m x 2 lifts) with 1.8m hop-ups.

Monbury

  • First gable scaffold (6.8m x 2 lifts) with 4m hop-up.
  • Double gable scaffold (13m x 2 lifts) with hop-ups to each elevation.
  • Two dormer access towers.
  • Rear garden scaffolds to both gables.
  • Front entrance scaffold (3m x 1 lift).
  • Rear courtyard scaffold providing balcony access.
  • Kitchen elevation scaffold with two working lifts and hop-up access.
  • Second courtyard double-gable scaffold (10.6m x 2 lifts) with twin 4m hop-up platforms.

Throughout the project, all required working lifts were fully boarded and fitted with compliant guardrails and toe boards in accordance with current industry guidance.

Our Solution

Our experienced CISRS-qualified scaffolders developed a phased installation programme that allowed painting works to progress efficiently whilst maintaining a safe environment for everyone using the care home.

Key project measures included:

  • Careful sequencing of scaffold erection to minimise disruption.
  • Safe pedestrian routes always maintained.
  • Weekly statutory scaffold inspections.
  • Ongoing liaison with site management and contractors.
  • Compliance with TG20:21 guidance and SG4:22 safe working practices.
  • Continuous monitoring to ensure residents and staff remained protected throughout the project.

Project Outcome

The project was completed safely, on programme and without disrupting the daily operation of the care home.

The comprehensive scaffold installation provided safe access to every required elevation, allowing external painting works to be completed efficiently across the entire facility.

The client confirmed they were happy with the completed works, and the project demonstrated 3SC Group Scaffolding’s ability to successfully deliver complex access solutions within occupied healthcare environments.
