Hanging Suspended Scaffold Inside Animal Feed Hopper / Silo

Delivering safe internal access inside a working animal feed production site called for a scaffold solution that could perform in a tight, awkward, and highly restricted space.

In this project, we installed a hanging suspended scaffold inside an animal feed hopper to give the maintenance team safe access for the replacement and repair of internal metal skin plates.

Because the work had to take place within the confined interior of the hopper, and above steep sloping walls, the scaffold needed careful planning, secure suspension, and a practical layout that could be adjusted as the works progressed.

Client Profile

The project was carried out at an agricultural and industrial processing facility used for animal feed production. The client required a safe and reliable access solution inside an internal hopper or silo area so their maintenance team could carry out essential repair work to the internal metal skin plates.

The main requirement was clear from the outset. The access system had to allow safe working within the hopper without introducing unnecessary obstruction, while also fitting around the existing structure and maintenance schedule. As the site remained operational, the scaffold works also needed to be completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to surrounding activity.

Scope of Work

We supplied and installed a hanging suspended scaffold system fixed to the structural metal grating above the hopper. This created a secure internal working platform for maintenance operatives carrying out plate replacement and repair work within the silo.

The scaffold was designed specifically for the internal environment and included:

  • A suspended hanging scaffold arrangement fixed from above
  • Secure suspension points connected to a load-rated rigging system
  • Safe working platforms positioned within the hopper interior
  • Non-slip platform surfaces to improve footing
  • Edge protection where site conditions and space allowed
  • A modular layout that could be adjusted as work progressed across the internal plates

Rather than relying on a ground-based scaffold, which would have been impractical within the hopper, the suspended arrangement provided direct access to the working areas while making best use of the available structural support above.

Timeline & Team

The project was completed over 1 to 2 days by a team of 3 scaffolders. All works were coordinated around the client’s maintenance programme to ensure the hopper access was ready when needed and the repair works could proceed without delay.

Because the installation took place inside a live industrial setting, timing and communication were important throughout. The scaffold team planned the sequence carefully so the suspended system could be erected safely, checked thoroughly, and handed over in line with the client’s schedule.

Key Challenges

This project involved several technical and site-specific challenges that required a more specialist access approach.

One of the main issues was the confined internal hopper space. A conventional scaffold built from the base upward would not have been suitable for this environment, particularly given the hopper geometry and the need to reach work areas above steeply angled sides.

Access from above also presented its own challenges. Entry points at the top of the silo were limited, so all rigging and suspension arrangements had to be planned with care. Every element needed to work within the available space while maintaining safe loading and stability.

The hopper walls themselves created another difficulty. Because the internal surfaces were steep and not suitable for direct support, the scaffold had to be suspended securely from load-rated structural metal grating above. This meant the anchoring arrangement and load path had to be properly considered from the start.

Movement within the silo was also restricted. To help the maintenance team reach different sections of the internal metal skin plates, the platform arrangement needed to be practical, adaptable, and easy to reposition in stages as the repair work moved across the hopper.

Our Solution

To overcome these issues, we designed a suspended hanging scaffold system that removed the need for any ground-based support within the hopper. By fixing the scaffold from the structural metal grating above, we created a safe internal access platform that matched the working environment far more effectively than a standard scaffold arrangement.

The suspension points were set out carefully and connected to a load-rated rigging system so the platform could be supported securely within the hopper. This gave the client a dependable working area for maintenance activity while ensuring the scaffold remained suitable for the restricted internal layout.

We also used a modular platform design so sections could be adjusted as the plate replacement work advanced. This helped the maintenance team work across different internal areas without needing a full redesign of the access system. The result was a scaffold solution that was both secure and flexible, which is exactly what the site conditions demanded.

Health & Safety

Health and safety were central to the planning and delivery of this project, particularly because the scaffold was being installed inside a confined industrial structure.

Before work began, the scaffold arrangement, suspension method, and load-bearing points were carefully assessed to confirm suitability for the proposed access system. The scaffold was then installed using secure anchoring to the structural metal grating above the hopper, with load-rated rigging components forming part of the overall suspension design.

Key safety considerations included:

  • Controlled installation within a confined internal space
  • Secure load-rated suspension and rigging points
  • Stable non-slip working platforms
  • Edge protection where possible within the hopper layout
  • Coordination with the site maintenance team and working schedule
  • Safe access planning for operatives entering and working inside the silo

By taking a methodical approach to the design and installation, we were able to provide a safe scaffold arrangement that supported the maintenance works without compromising operational safety.

The Outcome

The completed suspended scaffold gave the client’s maintenance team safe and effective access inside the hopper for the repair and replacement of internal metal skin plates. The solution allowed works to move forward efficiently in a part of the structure where conventional scaffolding would not have been practical.

The project delivered:

  • Safe suspended access inside the hopper interior
  • Efficient conditions for plate repair and replacement
  • Minimal disruption to surrounding site operations
  • Zero safety incidents during the scaffold works

By matching the scaffold design to the demands of the environment, we helped the client complete essential maintenance work safely and with minimal delay.

Client Testimonial

“The suspended scaffold solution allowed our maintenance team to safely access the hopper interior where conventional scaffolding wasn’t possible. The planning and execution by the scaffolders ensured the work was completed efficiently and safely.”

Project Summary

This project demonstrates our ability to deliver practical scaffold solutions for confined industrial and agricultural environments where standard access methods are not suitable. By installing a hanging suspended scaffold inside an animal feed hopper, we provided safe and reliable access for internal maintenance work, supported efficient plate replacement, and helped the client complete the job with no safety incidents and minimal impact on wider site operations.
